This study explores phsyique and basic physical strengths of children who exercise Taekwondo poomsae (Pattern) in their childhood using PAPS. A survey was performed on 32 subjects in total (16trainees and 16non-trainees), all of whom were male elementary school students from 5th grade to 6th grade. For the purpose of measuring researched data, 18 5th-graders and 14 6th graders were chosen as subjects. Among the trainee subjects, 6 children had training experience of less than 2 years, 7 children had training experience from 2 to 3 years, and 3 of them had experience of more than 3years. This trainee group was conditioned to repeat apprentice-level poomsae movements designated for the purpose of this study, and children in this group performed the designated poomsae training for 40 minutes daily. Data was measured using PAPS program.
The result of the measurement and comparative analysis is as the following.
1. As for the physique and basic physical strengths of children in each grade, there was significant difference in height and weight of 5th graders, where as BMI showed significant difference. 6th graders showed statistically significant difference in their height and weight, but not in weight BMI(p=.224>.05). Basic physical strength of 5th graders showed signifiant difference in all related measurements, except for muscular strength. 6th graders also showed significant difference in all related measurements, except for grip strength. There was greater difference in cardiovascular indurance.
2. Length of training period showed no relevance to physique, with p>.05 in all measurements, which was also the case with basic physical strength. In particular, the majority of subjects scored level 4 in muscular indurnace. These findings suggest that personal training method is more important than length of training period.
3. Regarding the subjects' physique, there was signifiant difference in BMI and height between trainees and non-trainees. Weight also showed significant difference, which proves positive affect of poomsae training on weight reduction.
All measurements of basic physical strength also showed significant difference between poomsae trainees and non-trainess, notably in cardiovascular indurance, flexibility and reflex. From these findings, we can conclude that Taekwondo poomsae training in childhood provides positive effect on children's physique and basic physical strength.
