초등학생의 상향비교와 스마트폰 과의존, 자아존중감, 불안의 구조적 관계 = Structural Relationship between Upward Comparison, Smartphone overdependence, Self-esteem and Anxiety in Elementary School Students

The purpose of this study was to examine the levels of upward comparison, smartphone overdependence, self-esteem, and anxiety in elementary school students and to explore the structural relationships among these factors. To this end, data were collected from 328 elementary school students in grades 5 and 6 (males: 160, females: 168) by administering self-report measures of smartphone overdependence, upward comparison, self-esteem, and anxiety. Key findings include First, elementary school students use SNS, games, and media on their smartphones the most, and when analyzed by gender, boys use games and girls use SNS the most. Second, elementary school students' upward comparison tendency was positively related to smartphone overdependence, anxiety, and SNS use, and negatively related to self-esteem. Among the smartphone functions, SNS was the only one that was significantly related to self-esteem, anxiety, and upward comparison. Third, elementary school students' upward comparison was significantly related to the extent of SNS use and smartphone overdependence, and was negatively related to self-esteem and anxiety. Fourth, elementary school students' smartphone overdependence mediated the effects of upward comparison on self-esteem and anxiety. These findings suggest the need to design educational interventions for elementary school children's healthy smartphone use and comparison attitudes, along with home, school, and community support for healthy development.
