Comparison of Product-Moment Correlation with Polychoric Correlation in Factor Analysis = 요인분석에서 적율 상관계수와 polychoric 상관계수의 비교

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 미국 청소년 조사에서 선정된 비연속적 지료인 70문항에 대한 500명의 반응결과를 이용하여 적율 상관계수와 polychoric 상관계수를 산출하고 상호 상관 행렬표에 공통요인 분석을 적용한 결과를 비교한 것이다. 두 측정치의 문항간 상호 상관계수는 polychoric 상관계수가 적율 상관계수보다 약간 큰 경향을 보였지만 그 크기가 거의 같게 나타났다. 각각 5개 요인을 추출하여 직교회전한 결과, 두 측정치에 의한 요인 부하량도 크기와 방향에서 서로 거의 비슷하게 나타났다. 5개 요인의 공통변량의 비율도 서로 비슷하였으며, 각 요인별 문항수는 70 문항 중 7개 문항에서만 차이를 보였다. 그러므로 서열척도의 자료가 대체로 정상분포를 나타낼 때 요인분석을 위한 상호 상관 행렬표는 polychoric 상관계수만이 아니라 적율 상관계수로 산출하여도 무방하다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study dealt with the results obtained from the application of a principal factor analysis to the interitem matrices of Pearson's correlations and of polychorics, respectively, on the sample size of 500, using 70 items selected from the Youth Survey. Two different measures of interitem correlations seemed to be almost equal in size to each other, except that the polychorics were extracted for each of the two analyses, and factor loading on five factors by two different measures were almost the same in size and direction. Additionally, the proportion of common variance for the five factors were almost the same, with the disagreements limited to only 7 items out of 70. It was concluded, therefore that when discrete data which show nearly normal distribution are available, a correlation matrix for factor analysis may consist of either Pearson's product-moment correlations or polychorics.
