‘학살은 재현될 수 있는가’라는 질문을 역사화하기 : 1980년대 후반 소설의 정치적 무의식과 ‘거창사건’ = Historicalizing the Question; Can Massacre be Representable?: ‘Keochang incident’ and the Political Unconscious of Fiction in the Late 1980s

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 학살을 문학적으로 서사화하는 과정에서 촉발되는 재현 원리와 재현 윤리 사이의 충돌, 그리고 이로부터 귀납된 ‘학살은 재현될 수 있는가’라는 아포리아적 질문을 1980년대 후반 한국의 역사적 맥락 속에서 재사유해보기 위해 작성되었다. 역사적 학살의 재현에는 재현주체와 재현의 진실성에 대한 수많은 쟁점들이 존재하는데, ‘레비의 패러독스’는 이 같은 문제를 가장 극명하게 보여주는 사례라 할 수 있다. 학살에 관해 써야 하는 작가는 자신의 주관적 관점이 ‘지시대상-학살’에 대한 왜곡과 오인을 배태할 수 있다는 점을 적극적으로 인식해야 하는데, 그렇기에 글쓰기의 미학은 사실에 대한 해석적 판단과 윤리적 판단으로부터 자유로울 수 없게 된다. 어떻게 표현하느냐에 따라 ‘학살’에 대한 수용자들의 해석적․윤리적 판단은 달라질 것이기 때문이다. 반대로 작가의 글쓰기 미학 속에는 이미 지시대상에 대한 해석적․윤리적 판단이 전제되어 있다 하겠다.
이상의 논의를 고려하여 본고는 학살의 재현에서 발생하는 해석적․미학적․윤리적 판단들의 관련 양상을 1980년대 후반기 소설을 통해 분석해 보았다. 김원일의 『겨울 골짜기』는 학살 자체보다 그 발생 원인과 희생자들의 삶을 구체화하는 데에 집중하였는데, 이 같은 서사 구성 원리는 ‘거창사건’을 인과적인 역사로 수리하려는 해석적․윤리적 판단에 의해 선택된 것이다. 이와는 대조적으로, 노순자의 「산울음」, 「분노의 메아리」 연작은 학살의 현장이 생존자들의 증언으로도 재현될 수 없는 예외적인 사건임을 수많은 부정문을 통해 표현한다. 이처럼 증언불능 사태 자체를 재현함으로써 작가는 윤리적인 재현자의 위치를 확보할 수 있었지만, 역사적으로 실존했던 학살 사건이 초역사적이고 존재론적인 ‘무엇’으로 추상화되는 문제를 해결하지는 못했다. 한편 「불울음소리」의 김영현은 ‘거창사건’을 1980년 광주와 1987년 대한민국의 현실과 매개함으로써 해당 사건을 국가폭력의 구조적 동일성을 보여주는 하나의 사례로 재역사화하게 된다.
이처럼 세 명의 작가는 ‘거창사건’에 대한 상이한 해석적․미학적․윤리적 판단에 따라 자신들의 소설을 완성했다. 이 같은 차이는 1987년 이전까지 각자가 걸어온 삶의 행로와 문학에 대한 상이한 판단에서 비롯되었을 것이라 미루어 짐작할 수 있다. 그러나 이 세 작가가 1987년을 전후하여 거의 동시에 ‘거창사건’을 서사화했다는 사실은 1980년대 이후 문학사 이해에 있어 한 가지 중요한 암시를 던져준다. ‘거창사건’은 한국전쟁 당시 남한이라는 (국민)국가의 법에 의해 관련자들이 처벌을 받은 거의 유일한 사건이었다는 점, 그리고 1987년 6월 항쟁은 (여전히 논쟁거리이긴 하지만) 정치 제도의 민주화와 경제적 자율화를 도모한 부르주아 혁명에 가깝다는 점, 마지막으로 6월 항쟁이 포지한 가치들은 그 의도와는 무관하게 남한이라는 국민국가의 영토적․이념적 한계를 선험화하는 효과를 발생시켜왔다는 점까지 고려할 때, 1980년대 후반 이후 한국문학은 ‘지시대상-현실’에 대한 해석적 판단(이념)이 아니라 더 작고 분명한 미학과 윤리 사이에서 재정위되었을 가능성이 높다는 판단이 바로 그것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article was written to reconsider the conflict between representational principles and ethics in the process of literary narrative of massacre in the late 1980s in the historical context of Korea. There are a number of issues in the representation of historical massacre, the subject of representation and the truth of representation. The so-called Levi's Paradox is the most obvious example of this problem. A writer who has to write about massacre should be aware that his subjective perspective may lead to distortions and misunderstandings of ‘referent-massacre’. Thus, the aesthetics of writing cannot be free from interpretive judgments about facts and ethical judgments. This is because the reader's interpretive and ethical judgments about the massacre will depend on how they are expressed. On the contrary, the author's writing aesthetics are already predicated on interpretive and ethical judgments on the referent(the massacre).
Considering the above discussion, this paper analyzed the related aspects of interpretive judgment, aesthetic judgment, and ethical judgment derived from the representation of the massacre through the novels of Kim Won-il, Roh Soon-ja and Kim Young-hyun. Kim Won-il's Winter Valley focused more on the causes of the massacre and on the lives of the victims than on the massacre itself. This narrative composition principle was chosen by interpretive and ethical judgments to accept the Geochang incident as a causal history. In contrast, Roh Soon-ja's series of “san-ul-eum” and “Echoes of Wrath” express through numerous negatives that the scene of the massacre is an exceptional event that cannot be reproduced by the survivors' testimony. In this way, the writer could secure the position of an ethical representation subject by representing the state that cannot be testified. However, the writer did not solve the problem of the historically existing massacre being abstracted into what is called a superhistorical and ontological ‘what’. On the other hand, Kim Young-hyun, who wrote “The Weeping Sound of Fire,” re-historizes the “Geochang Incident” as an example of the structural sameness of national violence by mediating the “Geochang Incident” with the reality of Gwangju in 1980 and the Republic of Korea in 1987.
As such, the three writers completed their fictions according to different interpretive, aesthetic, and ethical judgments about the ‘Geochang Incident’. It may be assumed that this difference may have come from different judgments on the lives and literature of the three writers before 1987. However, the fact that these three authors with different judgments narrated the “Geochang Incident” almost simultaneously around 1987 gives one important implication for understanding literary history since the 1980s. The Geochang Incident was the only incident in which the people were punished under the law of the South Korean nation during the Korean War, And the June 1987 protests (although still controversial) are close to the bourgeois revolution that promoted political democratization and economic autonomy, Finally, considering that the values ​​of the June protests have had the effect of prioritizing the territorial and ideological limits of the nation-state, regardless of their intentions, Since the late 1980s, it is likely that Korean literature has been redefined between smaller and clearer aesthetics and ethics rather than interpretive judgments(ideas) of the ‘referent-reality’.
