This paper is to investigate the relationship between heart rate and athletic performance. The level of physiological arousal is compared with athletic performance or somatic anxiety, elucidating the optimal level of conditioning theoretically supposed by the driving theory and inverted-U hypothesis. Twenty archers (male:l0, female:l0) of national caliber served as subjects. The level of physiological arousal and somatic anxiety was measured for given time. The major finding of the study is that there is a no positive correlation between heart rate and athletic performance in males and females, but that there is a positive correlation between heart rate and athletic performance in females.
