The purpose of this dissertation is to bring clarification to the possibility of applying counseling to preaching through integrative counseling psychology and preaching. It provides preaching methods be to combined with effective methods of pastoral counseling for a parish. The questions of this research are as follows: First, is it possible to integrate counseling with preaching? Second, what kinds of integrative models exist for counseling and preaching? Third, what are the effective integrative methods introduced for counseling and preaching? Fourth, what are the obstacles of integration for counseling and preaching?
This dissertation is composed of four chapters. Chapter one narrates the introduction including purpose, necessity, contents, and questions of this research. In chapter two, the research introduces integrative counseling psychology and preaching as a combined method of counseling and preaching. One is able to find four models of integration of counseling and preaching in chapter two. That is, the models are against model, subordinate model, parallel model, and integrative model. This researcher suggests absorption model in order to effectively integrate counseling into preaching. In chapter three, it deals with application of counseling into preaching. Possibility of application are as follows: first of all, visitation and empathic listening skills for a parish, function of counseling in visitation, relationship between visitation, and preaching, counseling; secondly, preaching as nouthetic, directive and quadrilateral counseling: the Bible, tradition, rationality, and experience as foundation of directive counseling; thirdly, storytelling as effective communication method in preaching; and lastly, application of group counseling. The preacher as a counselor must understand group dynamics, and psychology of group counseling methods. In chapter four, it deals with conclusion, summary, and suggestions for future research.
The result of this research are as follows: First, even though counseling and preaching are two different fields, there is substantial possibility of integration. Second, diverse counseling methods can be applied to effective preaching. Third, positive and emphatic listening in counseling can be alternated with visitation. Fourth, storytelling as narrative counseling becomes important communicative resource for preaching. Last, theories of group counseling should be applied for preaching of productive homiletics.
