      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Maternal mortality is an important indicator of standards of health care, irrespective of developing or developed countries in all over the worlds. Unfortunately, in Korea, national statistics are highly inaccurate and the analysis of maternal deaths can only be made on the basis of experience in indivicual hospitals. Statistis derived from hospital case loads can be misleading, and this could be true for Korea. Keeping this in mind, we have studied the caternal deaths and thier causses and characteristics on the basis of previous papers for maternal death in Korea. For the past 27 years` period(1959~1985), there have encountered quite large number of 682 maternal deaths, and total 160573 live births. The results are as follow: 1. The maternalmorbality rate per 100,000 live births was 423,73. (The hospital maternal morbality rate per 100,000 live births), was 222,65., and the matrenal mortality rate of DOA per 100,000 live births was 185.54. 2. The leading causes of maternal deaths in present study are toxemia(31.5%), hemorrhage(24.6%), infection(16.1%) and trophoblastic disease (8.5%). 3. In reviewing the trend or maternal mortality rates over the past years, deaths due to direct and indirect causes were dramatically declined (562.5 to 259.66, and 160.13 to 32.46). However deaths due to unrelated causes were basically unimproved. 4. Estimated maternal mortality rates related to the parity have an increasing tendency, as increasing parity. 5. The numbers of maternal deaths according to the time of ceath increased during postpartum. Especially deaths from hemorhage were happened during first 24 hrs after delivery, mostly(64.2%). 6. Most of the maternal deaths were considered to be preventable one (74.3%) in viewing of delayed admissions(44.6%) and some complication of treatment of medical mismanagements(51.1%). This study demonstrated that: for the prevention of avoidable maternal death, it is recommended that all the risk factors should be avoided and imparting health education, ensuring regular antenatal atte
