This paper considers the South Korean Late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age transition and proposes a hypothesis that explains the abruptness and discontinuity of the transition. Based on part of archaeological data, the ethnic replacement model, indigenous development model and farming adoption model only provide limited explanations of the transition. This paper divides process of the transition to the Early Bronze Age sequentially into its appearance, spread and transition, and focuses on the latter two processes. Comparison between diffusion and migration suggests that the rapidity of the spread was led by population movement. Yet, since the mechanism of the spread does not directly explains the process of the transition, how the contact between migrant farmers and indigenous foragers led to the discontinuous transition is considered. To do so, it is pointed out that the existing models' idea that sees the transition of subsistence as a consequence of the spread of a new subsistence technology does not explain the discontinuity of the South Korean Late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age transition. As an alternative, it is hypothesized that the abruptness and discontinuity of the transition were a consequence of the appearance of the territoriality in a mobile forager context, which led to the abandonment of the existing land-use strategy based on logistical mobility and resource-patch sharing.
