The purpose of this study is to explore the framework for explaining and analyzing Chinese elite politics in the post-Deng Xiaoping era. To this end, we have critically examined the main models that have explored the existing Chinese elite politics. These are “winner-takes-all,” “bandwagon,” “balance-of-power,” “power balancing,” and “organizational emperorship” models. After a critical review of these models, this paper presents a model called "institutionalization of the oligarchy.“ According to this model, China's elite politics was basically run by an oligarchy, which means a reign by a small group of non-individuals, after the Deng Xiaoping era.In addition, institutionalization related to “competitive coexistence” has progressed in order to maintain and develop the oligarchy stably.
