The drastic changes of business environments, especially the change of industrial structure caused by the progress of information-oriented society are forcing business companies to change. Team organization is being introduced to many companies, government organizations as well as administrative organizations of universities.
The purpose of this thesis is to find a desirable way of introducing team organization and managing it by analyzing the problems of those processes through an empirical study on team organizations.
For the empirical study, questionnaire survey on introduction and management of team organization has been conducted for employees out of 6 manufacturing companies. As a result of the survey, I, herewith, would like to suggest improvement plan for the efficient introduction and management of team organization as follows:
(1) The introduction of Team Organization had been decided by the management exclusively in most companies. This exclusiveness could lead to the indifference and resistance from members to the change of organization. Accordingly, making a consensus on the introduction of Team Organization among members through previous education and publicity is needed. Through the process, an organization could know if it is pertinent to team organization or not. And it is crucial to find an adequate type of team organization after considering the characteristic of their own organization regarding organizational environment and culture, human compsotion, and the objectives of the organization.
(2) The low morale of middle management has resulted from Team Organization, while the work responsibility of them has increased. They are deprived of the opportunities of promotion because there are just a team manager and staff in a flat and slim organization. Therefore, reasonable work assignment and endowment of rights to middle management as well as an adaptation education program are necessary.
(3) An efficient evaluation and compensation system is needed in Team Organization. The previous salary and the appraisal system are being maintained even after transition to team organization. An evaluation and compensation system should be operated not only for an individual but also a team. And colleagues and subordinates as well as superiors should have the right to take part in the process of evaluation in order to make the evaluation fair and reliable.
(4) There has not been enough delegation of authority in present team organization. But it is an important factor of Team Organization for a team manager to get the right to make all the decisions in relation to a team activity. And proper delegation of authority to team members is needed to promote creativity and autonomy.
(5) The ability including leadership and managerial skill of team manager is a crucil factor of organizational success. Team Organization needs team managers to have enough management knowledge and managerial skills ass well as strong leadership. Therefore, the selection of a team manager should be based on the consideration of his or her qualified ability, disposition and leadership, not on the length of service. And an education to enhance the leadership and managerial skill of a team manager is necessary.
(6) There has not been enough communication among team members, nor did they exchange information each other. These can be attributed to evaluation, competition among members and absence of information mind. Accordingly, the criteria for an evaluation should be changed from individual accomplishment to individual contribution to a team. Accordingly work ratation, regular team meeting, standardization of work and computerized system as well as team evaluation plan are needed.
