There are increasing needs to determine accurate energy expenditure for nutritional assessment and reasonable energy supply. In athletes, the accurate determination of energy expenditure is needed not only for valid energy supply, but also for improvement of exercise performance and fatigue delay.
This study reviewed various energy expenditure measurement methods in literature and analyzed their shortcomings and virtue, to find out reasonable method for measuring energy expenditure in competitive athletes.
There are recently much advances in the methods of estimating energy expenditure. The known method for measuring energy expenditure are doubly-labelled water method(DLW), physical activity questionnaire method(PAQ), physical activity level method(PAL), heart rate-monitoring method, and indirect calorimetry method. Among them, the heart rate monitoring is recently known as combinient method for using in field for 24-hr, because it is noninvasive to subjects and non-expensive and easy to perform. This mehtod is based on the assumption that oxygen uptake is proportional to heart rate, so regressional equations between them are used in calculation of energy expenditure. Among various equations, the equations based on heart rate-flex method calibrated individually are acknowledged as the most accurate and convenient in measuring the energy expenditure. The equations from heart rate-flex method calibrated individually was validated in many studies with gold standard techniques of DLW and indirect calorimetry. These comparisons suggest that the heart rate-flex method is a useful method for assessing energy expenditure for competitive athletes and provides an accuracy.
