It is desirable to pay attention to the Protestant missionary enterprise of American churches in Korean when the 1.30 anniversary of the arrival of H. G. Underwood and H. G. Appenzeller is being commemorated. However, for a long time missionary work in Korean was focused on and researched in relation to American churches and their missionary movement. This means that the Protestant missionary movement has been perceived primarily in terms of the American experience. But in this paper the writer researched and emphasized that the missionary enterprise in Korea was a result of a series of modern missionary movement since the later part of 17th century led by the awakening ofWilliwn Carey. As specific examples of this case. the writer suggested R. J Thomas of London Missionary Society, and J R. Wolfe of Church Missionary Society, Karl Friedrick Gutzlaff of Netherlands Mission. Gelson Engel of Basel Mission, and M. C. While and L H. McCully of China Inland Mission. Interaction among missionaries such as Robert Morrison, William Milne. Alexander Williamson. Karl Fredrick Gutzlaff in London Missionary Society stimulated and broaden the missionary movement to Korea before the Americans involvement in the Korea mission. Advent of Christianity in Korea did not came into being spontaneously, Of by American churches isolated from Western missionary movement but was achieved by a worldwide human and idea chains in the stream of modem missionary movement, In the later part of this paper, the writer suggested mission work approached by American church under the impetus of Student Volunteer Movement. and analyzed foreign missionaries who work in Korea by country and by mission board especially focusing on the influence thereof.
