다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

This essay attempts to examine the relationship between women's education and Korean Christianity during civilizing period from 1876 to 1910 in Korea. The author focuses on those years, for she believes that they are the formative years for Korean modem education, and that the nature of women's education in those formative yea" is radically different from that of women's education under the Japanese colonial rule from 1910 to 1945. even if one could argue that there are some continuities between these two periods. By modem education does the author mean a new educational movement characterized by Western modern values and culture, and clearly distinguished from Korean traditional educational system, which is Confucian.
Comparing the educational thoughts of Catholicism, Tong-Hale and reformists, the author first investigates the historical and cultural backgrounds that made Protestant women's education popular. Then she examines the early modern women's education illustrating and comparing the foundation process, educational goals, and curriculums of Protestant churchs women's schools and non-Protestant private women's schools, Thirdly and finally, the author analyzes the influences of Protestant women's education on the formation of women's consciousness in Korea.
Korean Protestantism contributed to the socio-cultural transformation of Korean society by introducing Western civilization to those pioneers and women who endeavored to change their society and nation-state, even if its role on the integration of women's consciousness, national consciousness, women's subjectivity, and Christian spirit could be evaluated both positively and negatively, On the one hand, Korean Protestantism in its early days contributed significantly to change women's consciousness and life through modernized education and women in the churches embraced such educational opportunities for a positive social change; on the other hand, however. Korean Protestantism after the Great Revival Movement in 1907 is being criticized for its withdrawal of the effort to integrate women's consciousness and national consciousness.
