This study is the first year`s result of the 3-year project designed to find a way to improve the quality of later years of life. Based on the co-work of different academic areas, it has been studied fully in multi-dimensions how 1) physical·mental health, 2) psychological change, 3) family relations, 4) occupation·retirement, and 5) leisure activities influence the quality of life. First, during the first year, to understand general characteristics and problems of later years of life, intensive interviews with 46 people between the age of 60 and 89 have been carried out in following five dimensions : health, psychology, family, retirement, and leisure activities. It resulted that Korean aged men in general were not so satisfied in their lives, and there was a big individual difference depending on their social status, health conditions, and presence of the partners. Especially, for the aged men`s subjective well-being, one`s personality factors, self-efficacy, coping strategies for events, family solidarity, and decision making were critical. Also, the quality of life after retirement was related to the socio-economic status : while financial problems greatly influenced on the quality of life for the low classes, how to spend the spare time after retirement was considered as a big problem for the middle and high classes. Especially for Korean aged men, the range of leisure activities was very much limited, and they were passive in its participation too.
