과천 찬우물 소리꾼 임정란(林正蘭, 1943~ )과 그 가문의 예술 시대

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 특정한 전통 예능인 집단의 기능과 의의에 대하여 논한 것이다. 경기도 과천의 찬우물이라고 하는 곳에 존재한 전통적인 세습무 집단을 중심으로 이들의 실상을 소개하였다. 이 곳의 중요한 민요소리꾼으로 우리는 임정란을 소개할 수 있다. 임정란은 다다한 삶을 살면서 경기도 민요의 전승자로 중요한 임무를 수행하였다.
이 집안은 굿, 판소리, 가극단 등을 통해서 자신의 기능을 하였다. 그 가운데서 가장 중요한 것이 바로 줄꾼으로서의 임무를 충실하게 행하였던 곳이기도 하다. 이들 임무를 통해서 전통적인 예능인들이 근대 예능인으로 자리를 잡았던가 하는 점을 알 수 있게 되었다. 과천의 소리꾼들과 예능인들은 우리 예술사에서 중요한 일을 수행하였다.
집안의 사실적인 근거를 확장하여 어떠한 예술사적 임무를 수행했는가 밝히는 것은 쉬운 일은 아니다. 입체적인 연구를 통해서 이른 바 예술사적 기여와 의의를 평가하는 것이 가장 중요한 일이다. 과천 찬우물의 집단적 기여는 근대예술사의 전환기적 임무를 수행하였다고 하는 사실이다.
