The logical argument used by Dharmakīrti to criticize the Sāṃkhya theory of perception was that “pleasure and so on” (sukhādi) are inevitably part of inner experiences insofar as they are perceived in accordance with increasing “concentrative contemplation” (bhāvanā). The conclusion that Dharmakīrti draws in his criticism of the Sāṃkhya view is that as long as Sāṃkhya views mental objects such as pleasure, etc. as external, there will be defects in the yogin’s perception and, furthermore, that Puruṣa, together with buddhi, will be useless.
There is a structure of self-consciousness as an uncompromising and consistent argument in the context of Dharmakīrti’s criticism, but Sāṃkhya’s assertion-or rather, the counterargument that Dharmakīrti assumed Sāṃkhya would level at his criticism-should be verifiable within the Sāṃkhya texts. Of these texts, the Yuktidīpikā, representing the Sāṃkhya view, interprets the definition of perception (pratyakṣa) elaborately, and therefore in the Yuktidīpikā we can find some answers to the problems in defining perception that Dharmakīrti had raised. According to the interpretation of the Yuktidīpikā, the Sāṃkhya definition of perception implies that even if pleasure, etc. are external objects, they become objects of cognition. Therefore the intuition of yogins corresponds to adhyavasāya (determination or non-doubting awareness), which is the faculty of buddhi, and yogins can perceive all objects directly through internal intuition even without the objects passing through the external sense organs.
Although there is a decided difference between Sāṃkhya and Buddhism with regard to the theory of perception, a partial compatibility can also be found between them. The notion that became a target of criticism for Dharmakīrti is partly at the junction where it is compatible with Buddhism. According to the Sāṃkhya theory of perception, the notion of the buddhi having pleasure, etc. as its constituents is an intimation that external objects also have pleasure, etc. as their constituents, thus casting doubt on the above-mentioned notion that it corresponds to a kind of self-consciousness (svasaṃvit).
On the contrary, while criticizing the Sāṃkhya theory of perception, in his Pramāṇavārttika, Dharmakīrti indicated a decided difference between Sāṃkhya and Buddhism by concluding that there is no need to assume the existence of a distinct knowing subject such as Puruṣa. According to Dharmakīrti, neither buddhi nor Puruṣa can be anything other than consciousness itself.
However, the Yuktidīpikā’s interpretation is achieved by reading the compound in the definition “prativiṣayādhyavasāya” (the non-doubting awareness of each respective object) as an ekaśeṣa compound. This interpretation leaves room for dialog with Buddhist criticism by paying no attention to the critical issue of whether desires (i.e., pleasure, etc.) are external or internal, in contrast to Dharmakīrti, who sets out to criticize Sāṃkhya by raising objection to theory of perception, which regards pleasure etc. as external objects.
In other words, we understand that the author of the Yuktidīpikā was devoted to establishing the Sāṃkhya theory of perception and criticizing the divergence of opinions about perception between Buddhism and Sāṃkhya, to be resolved through the medium of intuition of yogins. Of course, Puruṣa cannot be the object of such a transformative interpretation because Puruṣa is the basis of existence in support of Sāṃkhya dualism.
