This study aims to comprehensively examine research trends in Korean Studies supported through overseas Korean Studies funding programs and to propose future directions for more practical and effective policy support. To this end, the study focuses on the Academy of Korean Studies Grant Program under the Ministry of Education, one of the most representative government-funded institutions supporting Korean Studies research. It analyzes the status and thematic characteristics of research projects funded between 2006, when the overseas Korean Studies support program was launched, and 2024. In addition, a quantitative content analysis was conducted on a total of 1,880 research outputs, including journal articles and books, produced from these funded projects. The findings are as follows. First, from 2006 to 2024, a total of 364 research projects were selected and supported through the overseas Korean Studies programs of the Academy of Korean Studies Grant Program, with an annual average of approximately 19 projects. Second, in terms of regional distribution, Asia accounted for the largest share with 159 projects (43.7%), followed by Europe with 87 projects (23.9%), North America with 71 projects (19.5%), Oceania with 20 projects (5.5%), South America with 17 projects (4.7%), and Africa with 10 projects (2.7%). Third, to identify the thematic characteristics of the research projects, keyword frequency analysis and topic modeling were conducted using keywords extracted from research proposals. The results show that “Korean Studies” was the most frequently occurring keyword, appearing 138 times (10%), followed by “education,” “Korea,” “Korean Studies centers,” “curriculum,” “Korean language,” “Korean culture,” “Korean literature,” “Korean history,” “research,” “networks,” and “textbooks.” Topic modeling analysis identified four major themes: “ethnicity and national identity,” “culture and social representations,” “education and the expansion of academic exchange,” and “organizations and knowledge production.” Fourth, the disciplinary distribution of research outputs was dominated by the humanities, accounting for 1,056 publications (56.2%), followed by the social sciences with 617 publications (32.8%), arts and physical education with 109 publications (5.8%), and other fields with 98 publications (5.2%). At the subdisciplinary level, Korean linguistics, international relations history, political history, Korean literary history, and international politics were the most prominent fields. Fifth, in terms of historical periods, research focusing on the contemporary era accounted for 63.5% of the total output, followed by other or mixed periods (16.4%), the modern period (8.0%), Joseon period (6.6%), ancient history (2.4%), prehistoric studies (1.7%), and the Goryeo period (1.4%). Based on these findings, this study proposes policy recommendations for future overseas Korean Studies support, emphasizing the need for strategic and balanced funding that addresses underrepresented academic fields, research themes, historical periods, and regions.
