This s tudy examines the historical process by which the term haeng (幸)—an imperial concept of movement—was adopted and eventually established as geodong (擧動) to define the king's movement in the Joseon Dynasty. Originally, haeng originated from the notion of a sovereign bestowing "good fortune" (yohaeng) upon his subjects and remained the dominant term through the Goryeo Dynasty.
During the early Joseon period, the court sought alternative terminology to align with its status as a Confucian vassal state. While the initial attempt to adopt baebong (陪奉) failed due to a lack of historical precedent, other terms became strictly differentiated based on their political and ritual contexts. Haenghaeng (⾏幸) was reserved for movements with specific political objectives, such as granting tax exemptions during royal tomb visits (neunghaeng). In contrast, geodong (擧動), which originally referred to general conduct, evolved during the reign of Prince Yeonsan into a comprehensive term for royal movements to streamline logistical burdens. Additionally, dongga (動駕) emerged as a technical term for the physical movement of the royal carriage, while haengcha (⾏차) designated processions involving overnight stays outside the palace.
In conclusion, the terminology for royal movement in Joseon was not merely a rhetorical choice but a sophisticated product of the yeje (ritual system). This study demonstrates that these terms were systematically distinguished to define the Confucian hierarchical order and the specific nature of sovereign governance.
