The members of the genus Bartonella are facultative intracellular bacteria of the class Proteobacteria. Over twentyspecies of Bartonella have been identified. Bartonella spp. are related with various reservoir hosts such as cats, dogs and rodents. Bartonella is responsible for a broad range of clinical syndromes in human; Carrion`s disease, trench fever, cat scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis and endocarditis. Cat scratch disease caused by B. henselae presenting with low grade fever and lymphadenopathy is one of the most common zoonosis. In Korea, a few studies have been made on epidemiology of Bartonella. Some clinical cases have been reported. The study on theseroprevelence of B. henselae in healthy adultsshowed higherseropositivity (3.3%) than expected, suggesting that Bartonella infection is not uncommon in Korea.Further studies are expected to understandthe epidemiology and burden of Bartonella in Korea.
