중년기 성인학습자의 박사학업 수행 경험과 의미에 대한 질적 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 중년기 성인학습자들의 박사학업 수행 경험과 그 의미를 질적 연구를 통해 분석하고 기술하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구의 목표는 중년기 성인학습자들의 박사학업 참여 결정과정에서의 동기와 배경, 결정과정에서의 고민, 학업 수행 과정에서의 어려움과 보람, 그리고 이러한 학습 경험이 그들의 삶에 미치는 의미를 밝히는 것이다.
연구는 가정과 직장 생활을 병행하다가 박사과정에 참여한 중년의 여성과 남성을 대상으로 진행되었다. 중년기 성인학습자들의 학습 동기, 성과, 경험들 및 이와 관련된 요소들의 상호 관계를 살펴보기 위해 질적 연구 방법을 활용하였다.
연구 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 중년기 성인학습자들은 사회의 변화와 연령의 증가에 대한 놀라움을 경험하며 새로운 출발을 결심하고자 하는 기회로 인식했다. 이들은 결정과정에서 불안과 불만족을 겪었고, 이를 극복하기 위해 용기와 결단력을 요구받았다. 학습 과정에서 어려움을 극복하며 지혜와 인내를 발휘하고, 몰입과 즐거움을 느끼게 되었다. 마지막으로, 새로운 지식과 즐거움을 획득하면서 적응력과 자아의 성장을 이루어냈다.
또한, 연구 결과는 박사학업을 선택하는 중년기 성인학습자들의 동기가 경제적 이익과 명예뿐만 아니라, 삶을 재조명하고 자아를 실현하기 위한 것임을 보여주었다. 이러한 성인학습자들의 학습 특징들은 사회가 성인학습자를 위한 정책을 수립하고 이들에 대한 제도적 지원책을 마련할 필요가 있다는 점을 의미한다. 이 연구는 성인학습자들의 경험을 토대로 조직된 정책 개발에 도움이 될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This research aims to qualitatively analyze and describe the experiences and significance of middle-aged adult learners pursuing doctoral studies. The study focuses on understanding the motivations and backgrounds of middle-aged adult learners’ decision to engage in doctoral studies, their considerations during this decision-making process, the challenges and rewards encountered during their academic pursuits, and the overall impact of these learning experiences on their lives.
The study involved middle-aged women and men who, while balancing family and professional lives, partook in doctoral studies. Qualitative research methods were employed to examine the motivations, achievements, experiences, and related factors among these middle-aged adult learners.
Summarizing the findings, middle-aged adult learners perceived societal changes and aging as opportunities for a fresh start. Courage and determination were demanded on their part in order to overcome the uncertainties and dissatisfaction that they faced during the decision-making process. Throughout the learning process, they demonstrated wisdom and perseverance to surmount difficulties, experiencing immersion and joy. Ultimately, the achieved adaptability and personal growth while acquiring new knowledge and enjoyment.
Moreover, the results revealed that motivations for pursuing doctoral studies among middle-aged adult learners encompassed not only economic benefits and prestige but also a desire for self-reflection and self-realization. These characteristics of adult learners’ learning experiences imply the societal need do fomulate policies and establish institutional support for adult learners. It is expected that this study will be able to aid organized policy development based on the experiences of adult learners.
