The present study was performed to understand the characteristic seasonal variation of macrobenthic communities in Garolim Bay from April 2015 to February 2016. This study was used van Veen grab(0.1m2) for research 11 stations from inner to outside, and collected twice per stations.
A result of sedimentation environmental analysis, mean ratio of sand was 63.3%, the difference between sand and silt were shown by season.
A total of 250 species and a density of 1,893 ind./m2 of macrobenthos were appearance, an annelids were dominant of a number of species(110 species, 44.0%) and abundance(944 ind./m2). The mean biomass was 137.6g/m2, which was the highest in molluscs(89.1g/m2, 64.8%).
Seasonal number of species was 120∼148 species and the spring and winter periods were the highest and autumn was relatively low. The density was 60.6∼261.4g/m2 and showed a variation pattern similar to the number of species. The species diversity was 2.6∼2.9(mean 2.8±0.8) during the survey period and there was no difference seasonal variation. After BIO-ENV analysis between the benthic community and environmental factors, the sedimentation environment affects the number of species, density and biomass.
A result of cluster analysis, survey area was divided into bay mouth of sand sediment and inner bay of mud sediment. The number of species, density and biomass were higher in the inner bay group but lower in the bay mouth group. Seasonal variation of station group of bay mouth was the lowest in winter and spring and later increased. Inner bay group was the highest in winter and spring and later decreased. Also the biomass was highest in the summer of 2015 in both bay mouth and inner bay, and Polychaeta and Mollusca has highest percentage. The species diversity was higher inner bay group than bay mouth group, and seasonal variation was less in each station group. The variation pattern of the cluster was stable in both groups, and there was a temporary change between April and July 2015.
The dominant species was Mandibulophoxus hongae and Glycera capitata in bay mouth, Scoletoma nipponica and Ruditapes philippinarum in inner bay. From the SIMPER analysis, in this dominant species was contributed to classified as two station groups.
As a result, Garolim Bay is divided into the bay mouth and inner bay environment, and that benthic communities are affected by the sedimentation. Seasonal surveys and continuous monitoring are needed to understand seasonal changes of benthic environmental and communities in Garolim Bay.
