사회과학에서 가치와 객관성

국문 초록 (Abstract)

가치 자유 과학의 이상은 과학에서 과학자의 가치판단의 개입을 차단함으로써 객관성을 확보할 수 있다고 주장한다. 객관적 사실과 주관적 가치의 이분법에 기초한 이 이상은 오랫동안 사회과학자들을 사로잡아왔으며, 지금도 대부분의 사회과학자들은 이 이상을 공유하고 있다. 그러나 과학에 대한 근래의 연구들은 가치가 연구 문제의 선택과 연구 결과의 응용뿐 아니라 연구 과정자체에서도 불가결한 역할을 수행하고 있음을 해명하고 있다. 사실-가치의 이분법은 오류이다. ‘사실’도 인간의 구성물로서 주관적인 것이고 ‘가치’도 객관적인 증거에 기초한것으로 객관성을 갖는다. 사회과학에서 사실판단은 가치판단과 융합되어 있으며, 가치 자유 과학의 이상과 달리, 가치 개입이 과학의 객관성을 훼손하는 것은 아니다. 과학에서 주관성과 객관성은 상호 배타적인 대립물이 아니라 서로 배제할 수 없는 통일체이다. 사회과학의 객관성을 훼손하는 것은 가치의 개입이 아니라 ‘나쁜’ 가치의 개입이다. 사실-가치의 이분법은 과학에서 가치에 대한 논의를 금지하였고, 그것에 의해 사회과학은 삶과 실천의 문제를 지평에서 숙청하고 불구의 과학이 되었다. 사회과학이 사회적 삶에서 사실의 문제만큼 또는 더 중요한 가치문제를 다룰 수 있도록, 그리고 사회과학 연구에 더 적절한 가치판단이 융합할 수 있도록 사회과학에서 가치의 지위를 복권 해야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The ideal of value-free science based on dichotomy of objective facts-subjective values contends that sciences are objective to the extent that scientific knowledge is free from moral, political, economical or social values, but only by the available facts. It has enjoyed a long and distinguished career and many social scientists adhere to the ideal. But the ideal, many now say, has finally retired from the scene, largely due to advice provided by the history, sociology, and philosophy of science. It is agreed that values enter into science not only the decisions about which projecs and problems are worked on and the uses to which some scientific results are put also the inquiry processes and play the roles indispensable. Against the ideal I argue that science is not, and cannot be value-free and that relevant values are both constitutive and contextual. Dichotomy of fact-value is fallacious because facts are interpreted and value-laden and values are evidence-based and fact-laden. In social sciences, facts and values are merged, and value-judgements do not undermine the objectivity. It is not the value-judgements but the bad value-judgements that undermine the objectivity of sciences. The ideal has forbidden social sciences to enquiry into the values, thereby they eliminated the questions of life-practice from the horizon of the sciences and became a pointless sciences. Restorations of the values in social sciences are to be required for them to deal the value-questions as well as the fact-questions and to merge good values with facts in enquiry.
