To investigyte the clinical characteristics of open patella fracture and factors related with the prognsis of patient, thirty six patients who had an open patella fracture were treated, at Taegu Catholic University Hospital from 1 January 1986 to 31 December 199l. The prognostic factors examined were age, sex, fracture type, cause of fracture, the time interval between injury and operation, type of open wound and nethod of treatment. Of thirty six patients with an apen patella fracture, thirty one (86.1 %) was man. Of 31 male patients, 61.3 % was 20 - 39 aged. The mast frequent type of fracture was comminuted fracture(47.2 %). Seventy five percent of all patients had a good prognosis after treatment. The cause of fracture was significently asociated with the prognosis(P<0.1), That is to say, the percentage of prognosis in the traffic accident patient with an opee patella fracture(63.3 %) way significantly lower than that(100 %) in those patients who had an open patients fracture by fall down or slip down or direct impact. However age, sex, type of fracture, the time interval between injury and operation, type of wound, and treatment method were not significantly with the prognosis of patient.
