The purpose of this study was to investigate relationship between parentification and maladjustment of adolescents. The subjects of this study were 347 high school students(142 boys and 205 girls). The following results from this study: First, parentification was not influenced by student gender. Second, severcity of maladjustment in female students was higher, often manifesting through somatic complaints and aggressive behavior. Third, emotional caregiving and unfairness of parentification were related to maladjustment significantly, anxiety/depression, somatic complaints, and withdrawal were related to parentification significantly. Finally there was a significantly positive correlation between parentification and maladjustment of adolescents. The results of this study suggest that school counseling services must implement a program for treating cases of parentification in adolescents.
