남성군인의 남성성에 대한 수용자 해석 연구 : 채널A <강철부대> 수용자를 대상으로 한 포커스 그룹 뷰잉 앤 인터뷰 결과를 중심으로 = A Study on the Interpretation of Male Soldiers' Masculinity: Focusing on the results of the focus group viewing and interviews with Channel A's <Iron Squad> audiences

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 채널A <강철부대 시즌2>에서 재현하는 우리 사회의 남성성에 대해 이해하기 위해 코넬(Connell)이 제시한 지배적 남성성에 대한 개념과 멀비(Mulvey)의 시선에 대한 논의를 활용했다. 남성성은 그 시대적 상황에 따라 변화하며, 내부적으로는 다양한 형태의 남성성이 지배적 남성성의 지위를 차지하기 위해 경쟁한다. 우리 사회의 남성성 역시 시대의 흐름에 따라 변화해왔다. 전통적인 남성성은 강하고 마초적인 형태였다면, 현대적인 남성성은 부드러운 모습을 보인다. 미디어 역시 이렇게 변화하는 남성성에 대한 담론에 맞추어 남성을 재현한다. 본 연구는 강한 남성의 모습을 보여주는 군대를 배경으로 한 예능프로그램에서 해석할 수 있는 남성성에 대한 담론에 대해 고찰했다. 이를 확인하기 위해, 20대 대학생 및 대학원생 18명을 대상으로 포커스 그룹 뷰잉앤 인터뷰(Focus Group Viewing and Interview)를 진행했다. 인터뷰를 통해 미디어에서 재현하는 군인의 모습과 현 시대의 지배적 남성성에 대한 담론을 이해하고 군인정신과 남성성의 맥락을 해석하고자 했다. 나아가 군인의 몸을 바라보는 시선에 대해서도 살펴보고자 했다.
연구 결과, 군인의 남성성은 우리 사회의 남성성과 비슷하게 조금 더 따뜻하고, 덜 마초적인 형태로 나타났다. 또한 군인정신은 지배적 남성성과 연결되어 있었으며, 우리 사회에서도 이러한 군인정신을 개인들에게 요구하는 측면이 있었다. 특히 인터뷰 참여자들은 군인정신에 대해 투혼, 의지, 정신력, 리더십, 팔로우십, 인내심, 명예, 희생정신 등의 키워드로 연관지었다.
한편 군인의 몸을 바라보는 시선은 성별, 성장 환경에 따라 다양했으나, 남성 수용자들은 동경과 경외심이 어린 시선으로 군인의 몸을 응시하고 있었다. 또한 남성 수용자의 경우 여성들이 군인의 몸을 섹슈얼리티적 관점에서 바라볼 것이라 이해하고 있었으나, 여성들은 그러한 관점에서 군인의 몸을 응시하지 않았다. 이는 <강철부대> 전반에 흐르는 전투적인 배경음악, 분위기 등 여러 환경이 여성들의 성적 응시를 가로막는 장애물로 작용했다.
본 연구는 남성과 여성 수용자들이 이해하는 군인에 대한 남성성을 해석했다. 현대의 남성성은 과거의 마초적인 남성성과는 다르며, 그렇기에 군인의 모습을 미디어에서 재현할 때도 이러한 시대적 변화에 맞추어 조금은 부드러운 형태의 군인을 재현할 필요가 있다.
비록 군(軍)은 강하고 국민의 생명과 재산을 지킬 수 있는 모습의 군인을 미디어를 통해 홍보하고 싶어 하지만, 그러한 노력이 국민적 눈높이와 차이가 있다면 홍보 효과는 미미해질 수밖에 없을 것이다. 그렇기에 본 연구는 향후 군인의 미디어 재현을 지원하는 군(軍)의 콘텐츠 제작 업무에 지향해야 할 시사점을 발견했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In order to understand the masculinity of our society reproduced in Channel A <Iron Squad Season 2>, this study used the concept of dominant masculinity presented by Connell and the discussion of Mulvey's perspective. Masculinity changes according to the circumstances of the times, and internally, various forms of masculinity compete for the position of dominant masculinity.
The masculinity of our society has also changed with the trend of the times. While traditional masculinity was strong and macho, modern masculinity shows a soft appearance. The media also reproduces men in line with this changing discourse on masculinity. This study examined the discourse on masculinity that can be interpreted in entertainment programs set in the military, which shows the appearance of strong men. To confirm this, a focus group viewing and interview was conducted with 18 undergraduate and graduate students in their 20s.
Through interviews, we tried to understand the discourse on dominant and non-dominant masculinity in the current era through the appearance of soldiers reproduced in the media and also interpret the context of military spirit and masculinity. Furthermore, I wanted to examine the view of the soldier's body.
As a result of the study, the masculinity of soldiers appeared in a warmer and less macho form, similar to the masculinity of our society. In addition, the military spirit was connected to the dominant masculinity, and in our society, there was an aspect that required this military spirit from individuals. In particular, the interviewers related the military spirit with keywords such as fighting spirit, will, mental strength, leadership, follow-up, patience, honor, and sacrifice spirit.
Meanwhile, the view of the soldier's body varied depending on gender and growth environment, but male inmates were staring at the soldier's body with longing and awe. In addition, male interviewees understood that women would look at the soldier's body from a sexuality point of view, but women did not stare at the soldier's body from that point of view. This served as an obstacle to women's sexual application, including the combative background music and atmosphere flowing throughout the "Iron Squad."
This study is meaningful in that it interpreted the masculinity of male and female interviewees against soldiers and found implications for content production that supports the reproduction of soldiers' media in the future.
