근대계몽기 세 서사의 영웅과 그 인물 형상-傳과 몽유록, 그리고 신소설을 중심으로-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 근대계몽기의 유력한 세 서사 양식인 傳, 몽유록, 신소설에 등장하는 영웅과 그 인물 형상에 관한 연구이다. 이 논문에서는 이들 세 서사 양식이 영웅을 형상화하는 방식에서 차이를 드러내고 있다는 것에 주목하여 다음과 같은 점을 확인하였다. 우선, 傳과 몽유록의 영웅 형상은 서로 교집하지만, 그 영웅적 인물의 형상 방식은 차이를 보이고 있었다. 아울러 신소설(전과 몽유록에 비해 그 영웅적 형상이 더 희미함)은, 그 영웅적 인물이 지향하는 의식과 실제의 인물 형상이 서로 따로인 ‘구조적 파탄’을 드러낸 양식이란 점이 확인되었다. 신소설에서 서사와 관련이 없는 이데올로기(예컨대, 친일 이데올로기)가 종종 뜬금없이 개입되는 이유도 이러한 서사적 결함과 무관하지 않다. 이 시기 傳과 몽유록은, 주인공이 탐색하려는 가치의 실체가 매우 선명한 양식이었다. 이 두 계몽 서사의 주인공들은, 신소설의 주인공들과는 달리 이념의 모순적 양립에 의한 자기 갈등을 겪지 않는다. 계몽사상가들이 ‘숭고미’를 압도적으로 환기시켜주는 매우 유효한 계몽의 서사로 傳과 몽유록과 같은 전대의 서사를 호명한 이유도 여기에 있었다. 바로 이런 점에서, 이 시기 계몽사상가들은 끝내 근대적 서사와 만날 수 없었던 존재들이었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article investigates three important narrative genres in the Enlightenment period in Korea: Jeon(傳), Mongyurok(夢遊錄), and Shinsoseol(新小說). Based on the facts that the three narrative genres have different styles in depicting their heroes, the following four facts are confirmed.First, Jeon(傳) and Mongyurok(夢遊錄) are similar in terms of the characteristics of their heroes, but the way they depict heroes are different. Second, the characteristics of the heroes in Shinsosol are less heroic than in Jeon and Mongyurok. Third, Shinsoseol has critical defects as a narrative genre in losing consistence between the hero's ideology and his actual conducts. It is also confirmed, for this reason, that those ideology irrelevant to the story is found in Shinsoseol(新小說). Forth, Jeon was a very effective enlightened narrative tool arousing aesthetic sublime for the enlightened thinkers of the time. For Jeon clearly shows what the hero's ideological goal, and the hero does not suffer from self-conflict created by the contradictory ideologies.
