미국 아동문학 한국전쟁 이야기에서 침묵 깨기 - Brother’s Keeper를 중심으로 -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미국에서 한국전쟁은 잊힌 전쟁 또는 잘 알려지지 않은 전쟁으로 꼬리표가 붙어있다. 이러한 사실은 미국 아동문학에서도 반영되어 미국 그림책 분야에서 한국전쟁은 거의 찾아볼 수가 없다. 이 논문에서는 선행연구에서 연구범위를 넓혀 그림책은 물론 고학년용 소설까지 한국전쟁을 소개한 책을 살펴보고 지난 삼십 년간 얼마나 많은 미국 아동문학이 한국전쟁을 소개하였는지 정리해 보았다. 또 미국에서 출판된 한국전쟁 이야기는 한국전쟁을 독자와의 거리감을 두고 소개하였다는 선행연구의 분석을 분석기준으로 삼아 최근에 출판된 한국전쟁 이야기에서도 여전히 그러한 결과를 찾을 수 있는지 조사해 보았다. 그 결과 2020년에 출판된 Brother’s Keeper는 그 동안 한국전쟁을 소개한 미국아동문학과는 달리 시간, 장소, 초점의 관점에서 볼 때 독자와 한국전쟁 사이에 거리감을 두지 않고 오히려 독자가 주인공과 함께 한국전쟁을 경험하도록 문학적 요소를 구성하였음 발견하였다. Brother Keeper는 미국 어린이들에게 잘 알려지지 않은 역사적인 사건인 한국전쟁을 생동감 있게 그려냈고, 미국 아동문학 한국전쟁 이야기에서 뜻깊은 변화 또한 보여주었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Korean War has a nickname as a forgotten war, or an unknown war in the United States (U.S.). As this fact is reflected in children’s literature, the Korean War could rarely be found in the picture books in the U.S. Expanding from the previous studies on the Korean War in the picture books published in the U.S., the present study surveyed stories about the Korean War from picture books to middle-grade novels and summarized how many American children’s literature depicted the Korean War in the last thirty years. The present study also analyzed the most recently published children’s book about the Korean War in the U.S. to examine if the book introduces the Korean war to readers with a sense of distance. As a result, it was found that Brother’s Keeper published in 2020 was different from the previously published books about the Korean War. In terms of time, place, and focus, Brother’s Keeper did not create a distance between readers and the Korean War. Rather, it used literary elements to help readers experience the war with the protagonist. Brother’s Keeper vividly depicted the Korean War, which is not a well-known historic event for American children. It also shows a meaningful change in the Korean War story in children’s literature in the U.S.
