한국 신문에 나타난 여성스포츠 사진 보도의 이데올로기 = Gender and Nationalism in Sport Pages: Photographic Coverage of Women`s Sport in a Korean Daily Newspaper

This study investigates gendered and nationalistic quality of Korean printed media by analyzing the photographic coverage of women`s sport in a major daily newspaper since the establishment of Korean government. 55 years of Donga Ilbo published between 1948 and 2003 were sampled at 48 days intervals based on Stempel(1952)`s sampling method. Total 392 days of data was collected by gathering sport photographs and its headline and caption. As a result of categorization of themes appeared in the data, three major themes were drawn for data analysis. Data analysis was conducted according to these three themes: (a) manifestation of nationalism, (b) marginalization of women athletes and emphasis of femininity, and (c) sexualization of female bodies. The result shows that there has been constant exhibition of nationalistic image of sport women during past half century, especially when it comes to Olympic Games. Although there appeared gendered ideology since 1970s, including trivialization or marginalization of women athletes, depiction of appropriate femininity, and sexualization of female bodies, nationalism has been the central ideology in portraying Korean women athletes. Furthermore, it was found that sexualization of female body was witnessed only in case of foreign athletes or spectators.
