    This paper presents a user centered design approach based on collaborative design techniques for designing digital products such as information appliances. The focus is on an effective design development environment to assist participatory design, which include the tools and methods that allow designers to work together with end users in developing the contents and the user interface of digital products. A new sketch based user interface prototyping tool, STCtools, has been developed to support the development of the contents and the user interface. The STCtools is sketch based and include three components STCmake, STCcompose and STCrun. They support rapid creation of the states, compose the links between states with events and execute the results in real time. They support collaboration between designer and end users in the early phase of the design process. To examine the feasibility, STCtools was used in a design project of a hand-held visitor guide for a theme park. The lessens suggest that designers and end users could work more closely together for the project. However, it was limited for the end users to freely manipulate and develop the software interface concepts. This implies the different roles of designers and approaches of collaborative design in designing digital products.
