The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among self-determination, resilience, and team cohesion in youth soccer players. Data were collected from 328 elementary school players in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Jeonbuk Province using questionnaires that measured self-determination, resilience, and team cohesion. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The main findings were as follows. First, the sub-factors of self-determination, identified regulation and intrinsic motivation, showed significant positive correlations with all sub-factors of team cohesion, whereas introjected regulation demonstrated partial negative correlations.
Regarding resilience, positivity and sociability showed partial positive correlations with team cohesion, while the composite factor of positivity-control-sociability showed partial negative correlations. Second, intrinsic motivation, positivity, and sociability had significant positive effects on social cohesion between individuals and the group, whereas positivity-control-sociability and identified regulation had negative effects. For task cohesion between individuals and the group, positivity, sociability, intrinsic motivation, and identified regulation all had positive effects, while only intrinsic motivation had a significant positive effect on interpersonal social cohesion. These results indicated that higher levels of intrinsic motivation, positive thinking, and sociability in youth soccer players were closely related to enhanced team cohesion.
Furthermore, internally driven motivation and autonomous efforts directly influenced both resilience and team cohesion, providing important implications for the design of training and psychological skills programs based on positive psychology in youth sports contexts.
