A Study on Teaching Method of Expository Text Writing for Korean Language Learners of Academic Purpose

This study aims to propose teaching method of expository text writing for Korean language learners of academic purpose. Korean language learners feel the greatest difficulty in writing skill during academic program after major courses begin. Therefore, this study intends to improve writing ability for academic purpose through expository text writing education which plays a fundamental role in academic writing.
This study was conducted in accordance with the following procedures. Chapter I defines purposes and needs of this study, reviews previous studies, and organizes research questions and methodology. The review of previous studies includes Korean language writing education for academic purpose and Korean language expository text writing education for academic purpose. Chapter II summarizes concepts and positions of expository texts by compiling views of various researchers and reveals educational value of expository text writing to learners of academic purpose. In the course of this process, it is confirmed that expository text writing occupies most of the academic writing. Accordingly, Chapter III invents expository text teaching methods and derives methods to enhance writing ability by raising understanding about expository texts through teaching writing forms of each academic purpose by types and teaching educational Korean expository texts. Although each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, it is confirmed that a learner's writing ability plays as a variable. The latter method is appropriate given the language ability of a common Korean language learner prior to the major course. At this point, the features of content and structure of expository text for academic purpose are organized so that the elements of the expository text to be used in education can be identified. In addition, educational Korean expository text for academic purpose is defined after confirmation and reflection of Korean expository text for academic purpose through examples of expository texts presented in various textbooks for education. Next, Chapter IV confirms that a big gap exists between the methods derived in Chapter III and current classroom situations after analysis expository texts and tasks from Korean language textbooks for general and academic purposes respectively. Then, learners' writing texts are analyzed to check comprehension level of expository texts confirming that learners' writing ability of expository texts is consistent with the assumed level in Chapter III. Those findings are combined to determine that an alternative is necessary for education on expository text writing. Chapter V presents a teaching method for expository text writing applicable to limited classroom situations and designs a teaching model as an example. Finally, conclusion in Chapter VI summarizes this study and presents limitations and suggestions.
There are five points to sum up significance of this study. First, nature and scope of Korean expository texts for academic purpose is defined. Second, educational Korean expository text for academic purpose is defined by confirmation of elements which are necessary for expository text writing education. Third, structural problems in education for Korean expository text writing using materials are identified. Fourth, learners' writing ability of expository texts is checked and trends are identified. Fifth, practical teaching methods applicable to limited classroom situations and teaching model as an example are presented.
