This study aims to elucidate the operational system of animal sacrifice rituals conducted in elite burial mounds by undertaking a comprehensive analysis of the extensive his study aims to elucidate the operational system of animal sacrifice rituals conduct- assemblage of animal remains recovered from the Imdang-dong and Joyeong-dong tomb complexes in Gyeongsan. Moving beyond the limitations of earlier studies that focused on isolated cases, this research examines the structure and meaning of animal sacrifice rituals by analyzing the spatial contexts of deposition, taxonomic composition, anatomical parts, combinations, and burial practices of animal remains within the procedural framework of funerary rites. In particular, it demonstrates that animal sacrifice rituals were reconfigured and expanded over time, beginning in the early fifth century with practices centered on the interior of the main and subsidiary chambers and gradually extending into exterior funerary spaces. These changes, in conjunction with the differentiated use of interior and exterior spaces and ritual modifications at the level of clustered tomb units, indicate that animal sac- rifice rituals were selectively applied according to the principal deceased’s gender, age, and social rank. Furthermore, the concentrated sacrifice of marine fish, shellfish, and mammals functioned as a materialized expression of political authority, economic mobilization ca- pacity, and control over wide-ranging exchange networks. Through this analysis, the study demonstrates that animal sacrifice rituals were not merely practices of grave goods depo- sition or food offerings, but rather constituted a core funerary institution through which social structure and power relations among the ruling elite of the Yeongnam region during the Three Kingdoms period were reproduced and legitimized over time.
