고령자의 건강문제가 본인과 배우자의 노동 공급에 미치는 영향 = The Effect of Health Problems on Old Aged Couples` Labor Supply in Korea

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 고령자의 건강문제가 가구 경제에 미치는 영향을 보다 정확하게 파악하기 위하여 건강문제가 부부의 노동 공급에 미치는 영향을 확인하였다. 주관적 도구로 건강문제를 측정할 경우 발생할 수 있는 정당화 편의(justification bias)를 방지하고자, 최근 2년간 새롭게 진단받은 암, 뇌혈관질환, 낙상사고 등 11개 질병 및 사고와 ADL 지수의 변화로 건강문제를 측정하였다. 고령화연구패널 1~5차에 응한 남성 기준 4,220쌍, 여성기준 2,507쌍을 대상으로 1차 차분모델을 적용하고 프로빗 분석을 실시한 결과, 암, 뇌혈관질환, 심장질환과 같은 중증질환은 본인의 노동 공급을 유의하게 줄이는 요인으로 나타났다. 건강문제는 배우자의 노동 공급에도 영향을 미쳤는데, 남성의 경우 아내의 건강 악화에 영향을 받지 않는 반면, 여성의 경우 남편이 아플 때 노동 공급을 중단하는 경향이 나타났다. 이는 성별분업론을 지지하는 결과로, 여성은 돌봄 역할을 위해 노동공급을 중단하면서 노후 빈곤의 위험이 높아질 수 있음을 시사한다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 건강문제의 부정적인 영향을 보완할 수 있는 정책 대안을 논의하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to verify the effect of elderly people`s health problems on their own and their spouse`s labor supply. To control the possible justification bias caused by subjective health measures, it defines health problems as 11 kinds of diagnosed diseases and changes in ADL index. Using 1st-5th Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing Panel and first differencing model, it conducted probit analysis on 4,220 couples (based on men sample) and 2,507 couples (women sample). The results revealed that health problems significantly reduced the one`s own labor supply. The effect of spouse`s health problems shows the contrast between gender and age groups. While no effect is observed for men, women is more likely exit from labor market due to the spouse`s health problems. These results support the gender role theory which explains that women bear the caring role in household. It also implies that women may face the high risk of poverty in later life due to the short labor supply. Based on these findings, this study suggested possible policy tools to compensate the negative effect of health problems on aged couples` household economy.
