This study aimed to examine the impact of smartphone dependence on academic helplessness among adolescents and verify whether social withdrawal plays a mediating role in this relationship. The analysis utilized data from the 2019 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (2nd year in 2018). The study focused on 429 adolescents from nationwide middle and high schools, excluding cases with missing values in the measured variables. The findings revealed, first, that smartphone dependence and social maladjustment among adolescents statically influenced academic helplessness. Second, factors influencing academic helplessness included smartphone dependence, social withdrawal, and academic helplessness satisfaction, exerting a positive impact, while subjective health status and academic helplessness in courses exhibited a negative impact. Third, social withdrawal played a mediating role in the relationship between smartphone dependence and academic helplessness among adolescents. Based on these results, the study proposes policy implications and practical strategies, emphasizing a socio-welfare consensus to alleviate academic helplessness among adolescents.
