This study explores the relative rate of economic progress into homeownership of immigrants, compared to the progress of native-borns, and convergence in the likelihood of ownership attainment is interpreted as assimilation into the US society with respect to housing consumption. The study concerns the structure and quality of housing consumption. Three broad measures of housing consumption are analyzed: household formation, tenure choice (renting, owning single family housing and non-single family housing), and house quality (in terms of hierarchical value quartiles) linking the concept of the life course to patterns of housing choice. The present analysis is carried out for four groups of foreign-born residents in the U.S., White non-Hispanic, Black non-Hispanic, Asian and Hispanic, and for four samples of native-born residents of each race. The study adopts a double cohort method in the longitudinal perspective and visualizes the observed and expected homeownership trajectories. The study shows that although 1970’s immigrants in general do not attain the same level of ownership as their native-born counterparts, they make a move to substantially close the ownership gap in just a single decade. For recent immigrants who do not yet have enough wealth, taking a non-single family housing such ascondominium or apartment, or low quality housing in terms of value are a ladder to reach homeownership attainment during the 1980s. It seems that for this group, offering multi-family housing or affordable single family housing make it earlier for the groups to adjust their housing purchases to meet their changing housing needs.
