In 21st century, the age of the knowledge, employees are considered as an important intellectual capital. The source of enterprises to cope with the rapid environmental change might not be information but employees. Therefore, enterprises should support employees to develop core abilities which are necessary to conduct business. Self-directed learning is that a learner leads training on his/her own and makes decision on training and development experience and method. Learners select the goal, purpose and method of learning and perform with their own free will. Self-directed learning is controled by learners themselves in terms of planning and performing the learning. Companies emphasize on self-directed learning to solve potential problems and to make employees capable to solve problems coping with fluctuate business environment.
There are three types of self-directed learning in companies, which are induced, synergistic and voluntary models. First, induced self-directed learning happens to cope with the performance standard applying on a job. Synergistic self-directed learning is as the situation of companies and the motivation of employees. Synergistic self-directed learning is connected to present or future job in an organization. Comparing with induced learning, a new and constructive standard causes direct and prompt demands for learning, and job characteristic is not a condition to perform the role. Voluntary self-directed learning happens without situational promotion. It depends on each employee rather than reacts to a prediction. Many employees focus on development of job performance acquiring new skills, knowledge and attitude as a self-directed learner. It would increase the effectiveness of organization, both employees and employers need to operate self-directed learning in companies.
