Thucydides did, however, overlook the issue of what kind of leadership should be required in a situation of war and plague, particularly in a plague disaster. Pericles clearly boosted patriotism and nationalism by appealing to traditional distributive justice, religion, and law, while the plague destroyed the traditional values and ideology that held Athens together. However, many people criticized Pericles’ leadership in this regard. One such critic was Euripides, who saw Pericles as nothing more than the insane Heracules. Because Heracles mainomenos is a work that emphasizes the prudence-based leadership required in times of war and plague. Given its long history, the plague had a positive impact by allowing for introspection and insight into what is just and how to live.
