In Oriental Medicine, there has been a theory that the deficiency of the Qi(氣) and the Phlegm (磁)-Damp(痰) bring Obesity. And so a representative herb-medicine of the Damp is the Pinelia Tuber. We observed the effects of Pinellia Tuber on the tissues and what the function of Pinellia Tuber is.
These experimental studies were designed to investigate the effects of Pinellia Tuber Extract on the weight and lipid metabolism of obesity rats induced by high fat diet. And what is changed in the blood and how the leptin and the mRNA is affected. The measurement has been performed on 1) the weight of obese rats fed high fat diet and (2) the epididymal fat pad weight, and the average size of epididymal fat cells, (3) the number of epididymal fat cells, (4) The total cholesterol; triglyceride, glucose, and free fatty acids in the blood, and (5) the leptin in the blood and the mRNA in the visceral fat are observed.
The results are as follows :
1. In the Sample I, the weight decrease occured significantly throughout the whole research period, whereas in the Sample II, the weight decrease was significantly observed in the 4th, 5th and 6th week.
2. In the Sample I, Epididymis fat weight showed significantly decrease in the 6th week. (P<0.05).
3. In the Sample I, Epididymis fat-cell area was significantly observed decrease in the 6th week, whereas in the Sample II, showed some decrease (P<0.05).
4. Triglyceride and glucose showed increase, free fatty acids and total cholesterol showed decrease. In the Sample II, on the other hand, glucose showed significant increase in the 6th week (P<0.05).
5. In the Sample I, Leptin significantly increased, whereas in the Sample II, mRNA significantly decreased in the 6th week (P<0.05).
