학교선택이 수학학업성취도에 미치는 영향 분석: PISA 자료 분석을 중심으로 = Analysis on the effect of school choice on student achievement based on PISA 2003 database

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The effect of school choice on students' achievement is on debate in South Korea. However, few studies have tried to analyze the effect of school choice on students empirically. This paper implements the analysis of the effect of school choice on student achievement, using OECD Programme on International Student Assessment(PISA) data. The analysis on PISA shows that school choice variable has a positive and significant effect on students' math achievement. However, after accounting for students' self-efficacy and internal motivation variables, the positive effect disappeared. This result implies that the school choice variable would suffer from self selection bias, and the ceteris paribus effect of school choice is not statistically significant. And the result also means that school choice is not a panacea for education reform.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문에서는 학교선택여부가 수학학업성취도에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는지에 대하여 2003년도 OECD 학업성취도 한국자료(PISA)를 분석하여 실증적으로 연구하였다. 분석결과 근거리 학교이기 때문이 아니라 학업적 이유로 현행 학교에 입학한 경우 즉, 학업적 이유에 근거한 학교 선택여부변인이 자아효능감, 내적 흥미 등의 정성변인들과 여타 학교변인들을 통제한 후에 수학학업성취도에 영향을 주지 못하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 근거리 학교가 아니라 여타 학업적, 종교적 이유 등으로 학교를 입학하게 된 경우 수학학업성취도가 음의 값, 즉 근거리에 위치한 학교를 다니게 된 학생보다 높지 않게 나타났으며, 사실상 통계적으로 유의한 값이 아니라서 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 여러 이유에 근거한 학교선택이 자동적으로 학업성취도에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것이 아닐 수 있다는 점을 보여준다. 이는 학교선택을 확산시키면 자동적으로 학교교육이 발전하고 학생들의 학업성취도가 향상할 것이라는 것, 즉 학교선택이 학교개혁의 만능처방전이 아닐 수 있음을 시사해주고 있다.
