Brief historical review of Korean cultural psychiatry was carried out. Since 1960s, cultural psychiatric research in Korea has been active and ambitious. Research areas were broad : epidemiology, folklore, shamanism, religious experience, disease concept and attitude toward mental disorders, culture specific clinical entities and psychopathology etc. Recently, well-controlled comparative studies of psychopathology and acculturational problem, transculturally or chronologically, have contributed much to the development of cultural psychiatry. Study of cultural psychiatry in Korea is a promising area, since Korea is a rapidly changing society where the forces of tradition and of modemization, as well as the complex cross-currents of cultural interaction in the society, are sensitively reflected.
