이공계 연구원을 위한 인문학 강좌

국문 초록 (Abstract)

‘이공계 연구원을 위한 인문학 강좌’는 대덕연구개발특구 내에 위치한 연구소 연구원들의 창의적 상상력 계발과 정서 함양을 위해 기획되었다. ‘인문학’ 분야와 상관이 없는 것으로 여겨졌던 자연과학과 공학도 근본적으로는 인간의 삶을 위한 연구 활동을 지향한다는 점에서 ‘인문학’과 분리될 수 없다. 그러나 자연과학과 공학에 대한 인문학적 접근은 그동안 상대적으로 소홀한 측면이 있었다. 그 결과 자연과학과 공학 분야의 괄목할만한 연구 성과에도 불구하고 삶의 질이나 만족도가 떨어지는 현상이 나타나기도 했다. 이 같은 상황이 벌어지고 있는 이유는 여러 가지가 있겠지만, 인간에 관한 모든 것을 탐구하는 인문학이 자기 역할을 제대로 못했기 때문이다. 따라서 자연과학과 공학 분야의 연구 성과로 이룩한 물질적 풍요로움을 제대로 누리기 위해서라도 인간다움의 진정한 가치를 제대로 인식하는 것이 필요하다.
다른 시대와 다른 문명의 삶을 이해할 수 있는 역사와 눈에 보이는 현상의 이면에 내재한 자연의 원리를 근원적이고 총체적으로 파악하게 해주는 철학, 그리고 현실 세계에서부터 출발하되 현실에서 구현되지 않은 상상의 세계를 묘사함으로써 현재를 반성하고 미래를 구상하게 만들어주는 문학이 자연과학이나 공학과 만났을 때 세계는 무한대로 확장될 수 있을 것이다. 그런 만큼 자연과학이나 공학 분야에 종사하는 사람들에게 인문학은 불필요하다는 것은 편견에 지나지 않는다. 물질적 풍요를 감당할 수 있는 정신적 여유만이 인간의 삶을 행복하게 만들어줄 것이다. 본 강좌가 ‘이공계 연구원을 위한 인문학’을 강조한 이유가 여기에 있다.
‘이공계 연구원을 위한 인문학 강좌’는 ‘과학기술과 인문학의 소통을 위한 한 마당’, ‘동북아시아 문화 기행’, ‘서양 문학 산책’으로 구성되었다. 각 강좌는 12주 강의, 주당 3시간으로 구성되었는데, 인문학과 자연과학, 인문학과 공학의 소통을 위한 학제적인 강의를 지향하였다. ‘과학기술과 인문학의 소통을 위한 한 마당’ 강좌에서는 과학기술과 인문학의 교류 방안 모색을 비롯하여 과학 윤리, 과학적 상상력과 디지털 시대의 문화예술과 과학, 그리고 이공계 연구 현장의 번역체 문장의 문제점을 개선하는 방안을 모색하는 강의가 이루어졌다. ‘동북아시아 문화 기행’은 한국과 중국, 일본의 역사와 문화를 이해하고 새로운 미래를 설계할 수 있도록 한국문화, 중국문화, 일본문화 강의가 각 4주씩 진행되었다. 그리고 ‘서양 문학 산책’은 문학 작품을 통해 미국과 영국, 독일과 프랑스의 과거와 현재를 이야기하고 미래를 예측하는 강의가 이루어졌다.
한국지질자원연구원에서 한국지질자원연구원 전 직원을 대상으로 이루어진 ‘이공계 연구원을 위한 인문학강좌’는 인문학에 큰 관심을 가지고 있었지만, 한편으로는 인문학 지식을 쉽게 접할 기회가 없고, 다른 한편으로는 인문학에 대한 막연한 생각을 지니고 있었던 이공계 연구원들의 인문학적 갈증을 해소시켜주었다. 인문학 연구자가 아니라 이공계 연구원을 대상으로 한 인문학 강좌로써 본 ‘이공계 연구원을 위한 인문학강좌’는 이공계 연구자들이 관심을 가질 수 있는 인문학 분야로 선정, 이공계 연구원에 익숙한 언어로 강의를 진행한 결과 이공계 연구원들은 본 강좌를 통하여 연구에 새로운 자극을 받을 수 있었던 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Any development in science technology that is not based on some consideration or reflection towards what it means to be a "human being", can cause a devastating effect on human life. In contrast, when the results and achievements of research in natural sciences and engineering contribute to the mutual communication and accordance between humans and nature, life becomes more rich and abundant. History helps us to reflect upon the past, examine the present and design the future; philosophy allows us to probe into the essence of humans and nature thus enabling us to pioneer into the future of science; and literature takes us on an experience into the world of imagination, opening our eyes to the importance of creative imagination.
The "Humanities Course for Science and Engineering Researchers", designed to add vitality to the lives of research workers employed in various fields of science and engineering, consists of three lectures; "Science Technology and Humanities - finding ways to communicate", "A Journey into the Culture of Northeast Asia" and "Western Literature". "Science Technology and Humanities - finding ways to communicate" explores how science technology and the humanities can interrelate with one another. In addition, the lecture will give lessons on topics such as science ethics, scientific imagination, and culture, art and science in a digital era, as well as discuss solutions for the problems that arise with sentences in science and technology research materials that have been directly translated from a foreign text.
"A Journey into the Culture of Northeast Asia" offers classes on Korean culture, Chinese culture and Japanese culture, overall focusing on understanding the histories and cultures of these three countries and giving insight on building a new future. Finally, "Western Literature" will review various literary works from America, England, Germany and France to learn about the past and present histories of these countries as well as discuss their future prospects.
The overall course will allow science and engineering researchers, who possess extraordinary talents in the field of natural sciences and engineering, to develop their creative imagination skills and increase the possibility of applying those skills to real life. By studying humanities, the academic field devoted to the question of the human life, the course will also provide research workers a chance to get together and communicate so that they may reflect upon their personal lives and better understand the lives of others.
