This thesis analyzed the effects of student centered games and activities in developing students' communicative competence in English at an elementary school A total of 126 third graders, 72 boys and 54 girls, at an elementary school in Daejeon, Korea participated in this experiment over a four month period. The effects were measured immediately after the experiment, which was focused on a plan of game-based instruction. Before the experiment, the students were given formative tests on listening and speaking proficiency. Four months later, the same tests were given to the same group. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: Games and activities positively influenced on the levels of listening and speaking skills in English of the elementary school students. As a result, game-based instruction proves to be an effective way to increase a student's English communicative competence. Appropriate methods are needed to accommodate the unique physical, psychological and cognitive needs of elementary school students. Therefore, continuing action should be undertaken to develop and utilize a variety of games and activities so as to further strengthen English communicative competence in accordance with the needs of the students.
