This study aimed to examine the relationship between prior experience, presence, and satisfaction in VR training, based on the underlying premise that prior experience would influence participants’ VR experience. Drawing from the literature, we hypothesized that the presence of prior experience would affect the level of perceived presence during VR training and satisfaction on VR training, and would moderate the relationship between these two variables. To test these hypotheses, a pre-during-post VR training survey was conducted on 45 military officers of an armored unit, and follow-up interviews were carried out with 7 of the participants. The results are as follows. The t-tests and moderation analyses of an independent sample indicated that participants with prior experience in the training field reported significantly higher levels of presence and satisfaction compared to those without prior experience. In addition, the presence or absence of prior experience significantly moderated the relationship between presence and satisfaction, with a stronger moderating effect observed in participants without prior experience. Furthermore, the analyses of the interviews and survey were discussed in conjunction to aid in the interpretation of this study. The findings of this study hold significant implications for the macro-design of VR training programs that primarily target learners without related prior experience, and are expected to provide a foundational basis for the development of customized VR training designs in the future.
