다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

This paper analyzes so-called discontinuous constructions in Korean and proposes a derivational mechanism for them, using the notions of afterthought and pronominalization (of the lower copies). As an alternative to Jung's (2004, 2005) copy and partial deletion approach, I argue that what is involved in the discontinuous constructions is the notion of topic (introduced first) and conversion of the second/lower copies (introduced later) into pronouns. Since the functions of afterthought are to specify or provide more detailed information about the topic that is introduced earlier, the analysis presented here is hopefully more natural and well-motivated than, say, Jung's copy and partial deletion analysis. Under the present analysis, the first NP of the discontinuous constructions is a theme/topic, while the second/lower NPs are a rheme/comment. That is, the second (and the later) NPs are independently introduced into the structure and not by copying and partial deletion. Several theoretical implications of this analysis are discussed. Among them, the present analysis seems to provide more readily accounts for questions such as why the pronouns of the second copy is contingent upon the choice of the first copy and why in some cases the second copy is not pronominalized.
