Validation Study of the Korean Version of the Family-Centered Care Scale for Neonatal Intensive Care Units (K-FCCS-NICU)

This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the Family-Centered Care Scale for Neonatal Intensive Care Units (FCCS-NICU) for use in Korean clinical settings. The original instrument developed by Eminegeckil et al. (2023) assesses four dimensions of family-centered care: dignity and respect, information sharing, engagement in care, and collaboration with families. The translation process followed the World Health Organization guidelines, including forward translation, back-translation, and expert review. Content validity was examined by an expert panel comprising a nursing professor, a neonatologist, and three experienced NICU nurses.
Data were collected from 301 mothers of preterm or high-risk infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units, who had participated in the care of their infants during hospitalization. Psychometric evaluation included confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), reliability testing, and assessment of convergent and discriminant validity using SPSS and AMOS. CFA supported the original four-factor structure and demonstrated acceptable model fit (χ²/df = 1.71, CFI = .90, TLI = .89, RMSEA = .048). Convergent and discriminant validity were examined using average variance extracted and inter-factor correlations, with acceptable results. Criterion validity was supported by a strong correlation with the modified Family-Centered Care Questionnaire–Revised (r = .933, p < .001). Internal consistency reliability was satisfactory, with an overall Cronbach’s α of .916 and subscale values ranging from .65 to .77.
In conclusion, the Korean version of the FCCS-NICU demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties and cultural applicability. The K-FCCS-NICU may serve as a useful instrument for assessing family-centered care practices in Korean NICU settings and for supporting research, education, and quality improvement initiatives.
