This paper is to study the properties of traditional art schools in the Yeungnam(嶺南) area, and to find out how they were established.
One of the big changes in traditional art schools in modern Korea was that regional art schools, such as the Yeungnam, the Honam(湖南) and the Pyongyang(平壤) art schools began to emerge after the establishment of the Seoul art school. In the case of art schools centered around Seoul, Lee, Sang-bum(李象範), Byeon, Kwan-sik(卞寬植), Roh, Su-hyon(盧壽鉉), and Park, Seung-moo(朴勝武) were the main members, and modern landscape painting with a realistic view was their main theme. On the other hand, the Honam art school which had established its study program continued to pursue traditional literary landscape painting. The main members of the school consisted of Huh Yu(許維), who was a disciple of Chu Sa(秋史) Kim, Jung-hee(金正喜), Huh Hyeong(許瀅), and Huh, Baek-ryun(許百鍊) and so on. Most of the members congregated around the Huh family. In contrast with the Honam art school, the Yeungnam art school was less progressive in their study program. Its members were Seo, Byung-oh(徐丙五), Seo, Dong-gyun(徐東均), and Kim, Jin-man(金鎭萬) who were influenced by Lee, Ha-eung(李昰應), Chu Sa Kim, Jung-hee's disciple. What makes them distinctive from other regional art schools is that they studied Four Gracious Plants(四君子) painting, or‘Four Gracious Plants painting(四君子畵)’as a main subject in their painting themes.
It is also a fact that Sagunja painting was popular among literary painters because of the symbols that Sagunja holds. The‘Four Gracious Plants’consist of plum blossoms(梅), orchids(蘭), chrysanthemums(菊) and bamboo(竹) and they stand for courage(志操), a fruitful life(節槪), integrity and refinement(淸雅) respectively. People often misunderstand literary painting as Sagunja painting even though the main category of oriental literary paintings was the ink landscape painting(水墨 山水畵). The ink landscape painting was developed when a group of literary men was formed in the Middle-Tang Dynasty(中唐代) of China, and it was after the Song Dynasty(宋代) that literary men began to draw their own landscape painting. The Yeungnam painting school has diverged from the general category of art by literary men(文人畵). Therefore, any study of the Yeungnam painting school needs to be based upon the premise that Sagunja painting must be differentiated from literary landscape painting.
The artistic mind of the literary men made them lead a reclusive life. This was their main way of life. In other words, literary men assumed that high mountains and secluded valleys(深山幽谷), deep mountains and valleys, is their idealistic and pure realm to be away from the real and mundane world. Thus, landscape painting was favorable from the beginning. Facing the transitional era, there were many literary men who drew pictures for themselves, and this style of painting was named‘literary artist’s painting(文人畵).’Four masters(四大家) of the Yuan Dynasty(元代), Wu School(吳派) of the Ming Dynasty(明代), Siwang Wuyun(四王吳惲) of the Chung Dynasty(淸代), Chong Son(鄭敾), Kang, Se-hwang(姜世晃), and Sim, Sa-jeong(沈師正) of the Chosun Dynasty(朝鮮時代) were the leading figures.
The representative figures of Mukjukhwa(墨竹畵), the ink painting that depicts bamboo, among the Four Gracious Plants paintings, were Wen Tong(文同) of the Northern Song Dynasty(北宋代), Zhao Mengfu(趙孟頫) and Yi Kan(李衎) of the Yuan Dynasty, Xu Wei(徐渭) in the Ming Dynasty, and Zheung Xie(鄭燮) of the Ching Dynasty, etc. There were seldom cases from the historical point of view that pictures were drawn without the basic drawing attitude of expressing the ecological characteristics of the Four Gracious Plants. Such an attitude was also identified in the Mukjukhwa in Chosun Dynasty. The styles of the artists of Mukjukhwa from Yi, Chong(李霆) to Yu, Tuk-changand(柳德章) and Shinwi(申緯) coherently have the characteristic of being loyal to expressing the bamboo as realistic as can be. However, after the Chosun Art Exhibition(《朝鮮美術展覽會》,1922-1944) was held during the Japanese colonial period, the perception that Sagunja is a style of calligraphy and can be expressed with a single stroke of the brush as calligraphy is done was formed. Furthermore, Sagunja painting belonged to the department of Calligraphy(〈書藝部〉) during the exhibition, and Kim, Ku-jin(金圭鎭) and Seo, Byeong-oh(徐丙五) among other painters accepted the ideological style of China. Those events became the reason people began to be misguided in differentiating calligraphy and painting.
As a leading figure of the Yeungnam art school, Sokjae(石齋) Seo, Byung-oh(徐丙五) established and expanded the traditional paintings, founding‘Kyonam-Shiseohwa-Yeonguseo(《嶠南詩書畵硏究會》),’the research center for paintings and calligraphies in Deagu(大邱), where he concentrated on Mukjukhwa among calligraphy and Sagunja painting.
The literary painting of Seo, Byeong-oh was influenced by the senescent art style of Pohwa(蒲華) from Shanghai(上海) and accepted the ideological style that used the spreading technique(潑墨) of heavy ink(濃墨), popular when he traveled around China for ten years since the late Chosun period in 1898. As a result, he established his unique art style out of the combination of the expression of Chosun’s Mukjukhwa and Pohwa’s technique of spreading the heavy ink. His independent compromised art style was sublimated into a completely modern style of Mukjukhwa by his follower, Seo, Dong-gyun. Seo, Dong-gyun accomplished modern Sagunja painting in Mukjukhwa through the sincere power of description that daringly introduce a three-dimensional effect, sense of volume, or a perspective effect and through a technique that freely balances the relative lightness or darkness(濃淡) in the use of Chinese ink. He also had an excellent pictorial screen management in disposing objects and expanding the view to the whole screen. He built up a reputation as a groundbreaker of the Yeungnam art school and became prominent enough to be symbolized as the centerpiece of traditional Yeungnam art painters. Among the members of the Yeungnam literary painting school, Kim, Jin-man is also essential to be noted. He not only played an active role in the Korea’s independence movement, but also took Mukjukhwa as his main theme, building his own style close to the middle styles of Seo, Byeong-oh and Seo, Dong-gyun. That is to say, he served as a bridge that connects the two painting styles together in the development of the Yeungnam literary painting style.
