People are deeply concerned about juvenile delinquency these days as it is an increasingly serious social problem. Especially teenage depression and suicide need to be researched and dealt with. The measurements were conducted from the perspective of the social security system and self-consciousness and the research operated under the assumption that self esteem in adolescence is the key factor in resolving this issue. Forming self esteem, the main task in adolescence, seeks healthy growth and personal development and it supports local community development based on the confidence by making adolescents perform their social roles and establish their values. From a national standpoint, the formation of self esteem affects not only the prevention of crimes but also the utilization of human resources.
Self esteem can be the notion of self estimate and has several different definitions but this research was started by defining it as 'the estimation of oneself and the degree of self acceptance and self respect'. Among the diverse factors that affect self esteem, economic capital, social capital, and cultural capital were considered in this research.
Economic capital can be immediately and directly changed into currency and it is institutionalized as ownership. It consists of production factors and economic goods such as material goods. Social capital can be defined as confidence, standards, and human networks. Cultural capital can be defined as a tool for the possessing of symbolic wealth that is socially worthy of possession or pursuit, and in this research cultural capital is defined as 'the domestic cultural experience passed down through the process of socialization' and it is assessed in two parts; objectified cultural capital and embodied cultural capital.
The research was conducted on 724 secondary school students in Seongnam city, and the results are as follows.
First, the degree to which parent’s economic capital affects students' self esteem was studied. The result showed a poor correlation between them but since there is a difference in the level of self esteem in areas with the different economic capital, it follows that economic capital affects the self esteem indirectly.
Second, the result showed a high correlation between social capital and self esteem. Especially, according to the result of the study on networks, confidence, and the standards, the correlation between networks and self esteem turned out to be the highest and not only the social capital in homes but also the social capital based on relations or confidence in the community affects students' self esteem.
Third, although the correlation between cultural capital and self esteem was relatively low, embodied cultural capital showed a rather high correlation with self esteem.
Fourth, among the economic capital, the social capital, and the cultural capital, the cultural capital and the economic capital showed a high correlation. This is consistent with the previous study that the cultural capital is converted economic capital. The social capital and the cultural capital didn't seem to correlate strongly. This suggests that it is necessary to study domestic social capital independently when considering the fact that even though the social capital helps to increase economic capital and cultural capital, it also includes the community social capital aspect.
This research has limits in generalization since it was conducted where the economic capital, the social capital, and the cultural capital were not controlled, and it was qualitatively insufficient and restricted to the Seongnam area. However it is expected to help new towns, which are built as a part of community development, prepare alternatives to solve a big gap with neighboring area in relative deprivation and education. Especially, this research can play a significant role in being applied as material for improving educational policy or the educational environment when concerning the effects that the economical capital, social capital, and cultural capital have on students' self esteem.
