탈냉전, 세계화, 탈근대 시대의 국제관계학 -대상과 방법의 재구성 = International Relations Theory Revisited

Existing theories of international relations are in crisis because of the tectonic changes such as the end of the Cold War, globalization and post-modern phenomena. It seems that this crisis is the most serious one since the Second World War around which the discipline of international relations was first established. We recognize that the crisis of existing theories may give a window of opportunity to explore new kinds of theory. Among new theories that reflect the triple changes, a theory is considered as a tool, critique, or everyday practice according to its philosophical base. This article makes an attempt to overcome the "theoretical chaos" in terms of the reconstruction of theory and methods in international relations.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

국제관계학이 본격적인 분과학문으로 자리 잡은 이차대전 이래 최대의 위기와 혼란에 빠져 있다. 국제관계학은 국제관계 현실을 인식하기 위한 안내자 역할을 할 ‘방향타’를 상실한 채, 온갖 새로운 현상이 돌출하는 “미지의 바다를 떠돌고 있다”. 이른바 냉전체제의 지각변동을 추동하고 있는 탈냉전, 세계화, 탈근대라는 변화의 삼중주가 기존 국제관계학 이론의 적실성을 위협하고 있는 것이다. 그러나 이론의 위기는 동시에 새로운 이론을 모색할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기도 한다. 새로운 이론들은, 실증주의적 인식의 ‘도구’를 혁신하는 형태이기도 하지만, 다른 한편 비판적 국제관계이론이나 페미니스트 국제관계이론에서 볼 수 있는 것처럼 ‘비판’ 또는 ‘실천’의 성격을 띠고 있기도 하다. 이 글은, 새로운 현실을 마주하고 있는 국제관계학의 대상과 방법의 재구성이라는 시각에서 국제관계학의 “이론적 혼돈”을 정리하려는 시도이다.
