This study proposes a numerical analysis-based method for accurately estimating surface emissivity using two long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectral channels, providing a lightweight yet effective alternative to conventional hyper-spectral thermal imaging systems. Hyper-spectral approaches, such as HADAR, can separate temperature and emissivity with high precision but generally require complex optical systems and expensive hardware, which greatly limits their practicality for real-time or embedded applications. In contrast, the proposed method combines a physics-based thermal emission model derived from Planck’s law with Brent’s numerical root-finding algorithm to sequentially estimate object temperature and then compute emissivity. This approach significantly reduces hardware complexity while maintaining quantitative accuracy. To evaluate performance, experiments were conducted using the HADAR dataset, in which the 8 µm and 10 µm channels were selected from the 49 available LWIR bands. As a result, the emissivity maps clearly distinguished surfaces such as vegetation, water, soil, and concrete, even under identical temperature conditions. Furthermore, the estimated emissivity data were applied to material classification tasks, demonstrating both quantitative reliability and visual interpretability. These experimental results indicate the potential of the proposed method for real-time thermal analysis and its integration into mobile or embedded multi-spectral sensing platforms.
