This study explores how the concept of subjectivity in artistic creation is being reconfigured amid the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The emergence of generative AI involves the substantive intervention of non-human actors in the artistic creation process, demanding a critical reexamination of the traditional concept of the ‘creative subject’—long understood as centered on human intention and inspiration.
Therefore, this paper adopts Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory (ANT) as its theoretical framework to analyze the structure of creative networks, where humans and non-humans, technology, and artistic practices are intertwined and co-constructed. ANT's analytical symmetry perspective allows us to understand creation not as the internal act of a single individual, but as a relational outcome formed through the processes of ‘translation,’ 'mediation,‘ and 'materialization’ by diverse actors.
This study examines how generative AI intervenes in creative acts and its influence, focusing on the cases of Refik Anadol's data-based installation work, Pierre Huyghe's ecological system art, and the French group Obvious's Portrait of Edmond de Belamy. Anadol demonstrates a technical performativity that transforms algorithms and large datasets into sensory experiences, while Huyghe reveals an ecological subjectivity co-constructed by humans, non-humans, and the environment. The Obvious case reveals the social process by which AI outputs gain recognition as art through the convergence of algorithms, the art institution, and the auction system.
Through this analysis, this study proposes that artistic creation in the generative AI era must be understood as a relational and networked subjectivity co-constructed by humans, machines, environments, and institutions, transcending human-centered authorship. This contributes to redefining concepts of creativity and subjectivity across contemporary art, techno-aesthetics, and digital humanities.
